Hi All

Past couple of months i have been deciding to get the Wug or not,
but know it crunch time, its a no brainer, and i really really want to get it...

But like all things, I'm a hands on guy, and i do my homework 1st...
& talked to a lot of people that are connected.

So this is where I AM NOW.

1) LOCATION WISE (I live on the border of Bircheigh & Norkem Park)
i.e. ( This would be the highest point, cuz all the other people in Norkem Park, thats the other side of the hill can't see the Trusbank tower)

On this picture you can see the trust Bank Tower nicely,
as i was told, if you can see that building, you are a very lucky man...

And here you can see in the opposite direction to Norkem Park Area, for those who know the area, (hey look there is McDonalds).

2) FROM THE TOP
On Google Earth It will look something like this...
As per kml plotter

My first impression was OMG, look at the amount of people,
i know there is some that is still under the possibility factor,
but still, imagine all this possibles come the their senses LOL

3) LOS FACTOR
Then i did the line of sight calculation as well...

So it all looks good, so far... i think

TO MY QUESTION THOUGH:

WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE: Question
WHO DO I CONTACT Question
WHOM DO I TALK TO Question
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO GET EQUIPMENT Question

Any help will be really appreciated Idea

If you want to contact me...

Thanks Very Happy

I wish all new guys made posts like this, absolutely excellent.

ok I cant really answer all your questions but I'll try

The way forward is as follows
We need to confirm with Silencer that there is something pointing your way, I think there is. We also need to find out if its 2.4 or 5.8 equipment.

After that you can get your equipment, it should really be a matter of phoning up the supplier and fetching it.

I'll point this post out to Silencer as soon as I see him. In the mean time come chat with us in IRC.

Thanks again for the great effort Smile

ok I have news

There is an antenna pointing your way and its 5.8Gig, so you will need a CPE, radio and accessories for 5.8.

You can get the stuff from one of the supliers, Uniterm, Miro or scoop

I would recommend you get a RB433 as it can take 3 radios for future expantion http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=53&products_id=196
you will need one radio http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=55&products_id=172
a pigtail http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=231
some 1m lmr cable http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=57&products_id=72
and connectors for the cable, they can stick this on for you http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=58&products_id=66
(just check you might not need the cable and can use an adapter if the antenna has a short piece of cable on it)
a small antenna http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=169
an enclosure (get something waterproof)
poe http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=221
psu http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=261
and some network cable

the above is only a recommendation, if you can connect to several people the network will improve. There are cheaper options but they usually limit you, the links I put there are for Uniterm but the same equipment will be available at the other suppliers. you can use the jawug account when asked and will get a small discount on the prices you see on the web.
If you have any questions or just want to make sure i did not stuff up, come chat in IRC and get a second opinion.
I hope I got all that right

Thanks for the help so far,
Now i have a basic understanding of equipment wise!

Now its a matter of choosing what is best,
what is optional, what is a must, and what is best for future reference Idea

PostPosted: Tue Apr 28, 2009 5:47 pm    Post subject: WUG POST (After) Setup Reply with quote

I "almost" forgot to come back & complete this topic....

hahaha

I got my WUG up and running in the beginning of the month.
However I would like to share my experience...

1st ->
I bought my stuff @ Scope in Midrand. Ordered it via e-mail.
Confirmed Stock Via Phone. Drove quickly there to fetch it.
Paid & stuff, came back with a big smile but only the beginning though Idea

2nd ->
Examining the equipment before setting up.
I could not believe my eyes to start with...
WHY ?
Well I've never seen a Kit in my life O.K.
What you see on the WEB, and what you get 1st Hand are two different things. I Had to get a Match Box "TO COMPARE", the actual size...
Yeah Laugh All You Want... (I honestly did not know)

I did not mind getting the Pre-Built Kit, but I wanted to build it myself.
More fun too, and you know it's your own hand work.

Assembled the stuff that needed to be, and then i got ready to go up &
down the roof, a lot of time Arrow

This is Before my Actual Setup, I was lucky enough
the Old UHF Antennas mounting was never taken down & the DSTV
is on the other side...

Thank God for Cordless Drill, my feet was not happy though,
I walked like Charlie Chaplin for a whilst ,your feet and legs takes punishment due to the angle of the roof.
It wont go anywhere for now, but I even put silicone on both sides.

Down the roof, and back up again
(Put the Board In)

Basic Parts Set Up (Just The Lan Cable To Finish)

And there we go, All setup up eventually.
(Check the TIME)
Some people actually phoned me when is was on the roof,
asking me what the hell I'm doing this time of the Night on the roof.
Crimping that Cable was a tough one though, Light was bad...

But I was not finished.
I heard if you want to go the extra mile, then you actually need to enclose the metal parts of your connection as well.
So i got some Rubber Wrap,

Before

After

Before

After

AND THERE YOU ARE
I think any more, and I would have.....
NEVER MIND THAT THOUGHT.
I know I out DID myself, but that's the thing.
It was purely for myself, and the learning process included.

The speed are great, and the latency too.
At the end of the day it is what you make of it
Exclamation

Well spotted, it holds very firmly, but after I put it together, and everything was finished, I saw the bracket thingy "U" should actually be in the other way.

But thanks guys... the comments are well appreciated
Very Happy
