|
|
I want to start my own wug in Oudtshoorn but need a little info.
1. How should i let the people connect to my AP? unsecure access or login with username and password via hotspot feature on mikrotik rb?
2. what unprofit services can i run on the wug etc: http and games.
3. Will i be inspecting a visit from icasa at a later stage to inspect if im realy non-profit.
4. Is the wug name inportant?
5. Did hackers\bored people ever tried to hack a wug?
6. Did i forgot something to ask? |

How far did you get?
Are you planning on using 2.4ghz or 5.8 ghz?
Is it really necessary to involve ICASA if you're going to use 5.8GHZ and on what level? |

It appears as if there's a lot of confusion as to what one is allowed to do and not do.
My understanding is that 2.4ghz is licensed spectrum and that 5.8 is unlicensed.
I think if you're planning to use 2.4 then you need the exemption but if you're going to use 5.8 then its not necessary because its unlicensed spectrum.
Am I missing something? |

i've spoken to people from ctwug and they are also using all the spectrums. exempt if for non-profit wifi. So if you its free then it can be exempted. I do not know if i have to hax the 72page gazette back to icasa, or only the exempt part. |

Ok
Do you know if the exemption application costs anything?
Are there still other restrictions if you operate in 2.4 with exemption like issues relating to power output of your radio's and/or antenna's ?
2.4 is of course much more appealing because most wireless equipment is capable of 2.4 - Its important to know which one you're going to use before buying antenna's |

So where is the legal framework which the other WUG's are operating within? |

Nope - Have not sent anything yet. My understanding is that ISM should automatically be exempt from license since its license free spectrum.
According to notice 533 of 2004 from ICASA they mention two concerning things:
2,400-2483.5 (WLAN) is limited to 100mW EIRP.
5725-5875 (what we know as 5.8ghz) is limited to 25mW EIRP???? That's ridiculous!
It also mentions "additional requirements" as CEPT/ERC/REC 70-03
But I am unsure of what that means.
So what does license exemption give you? The ability to exceed the EIRP? The ability to use a non ISM frequency? That's what I'm trying to figure out |

Check this http://www.ellipsis.co.za/?p=296
Seems they have extracted the application form from the gazette so its not necessary to send back the entire thing.
I'm just unsure of one thing... do you apply as a natural person or do you need to establish a non-profit organisation first and then apply in the capacity of the NPO? |

i wish, im about 800km from jawug so that would be impossible. The nearest wug to me is ctwug(250km). So im hoping that there will be some other wugs in my area.
Im stil busy improving my wugsite and might be up in a month or so. Where are you from? |
