Why Merge?

  • At a glance it is going to be much easier to promote one WUG rather than 3 different ones in one province.
  • Jawug has been looking into registering as an NPO, being one wug will avoid the necessity to do it 3 times and whether PTAwug would would like to do the same thing eventually. This is however depandant on the codes of conduct. A possible amalgamation and revision of the two codes of conduct might need to be looked at.
  • Merging is bound to have issues, but it will help grow the WUG as a whole, which would be the main topic of discussion at the meet.
  • No one will disagree that PTAWug has been the fastest growing WUG. Within a year (and a little takeover venture in pta) they have equaled the size of Jawug, which took between 2 & 3 years to get where it is. Yes things are a little easier now to get information on getting connected through wug.za.net and the wugplotter but PTAWUG has an awesome campaign to get new guys on and get contributions which is mainly why it is where it is today and Jawug can learn from this.
  • Jawug being the older wug might have a bit more experience in the management of wifi utilisation, protocols, qos etc.
  • Both WUGs will benefit from such a venture in the long run.

So with the merge we are looking for possible names... here are a few ideas...

  • Synonyms for Federation : association, club, confederation, congress, fellowship, fraternity, guild, league, order, organization, society, sorority, Anschluss, bloc, cartel, coalition, confederacy, confederation, league, organization, union, alliance, amalgamation, association, bunch, coalition, combination, confederacy, crew, crowd, entente, family, federacy, gang, league, mob, outfit, pool, ring, syndicate, syndication, tribe
  • Total merge on all levels or a "oorkoepelende" name so we can market the networks easier but still build the pta and jhb networks seperately as well as have one constitution for the whole wug - a Federation. [ProtZkroG]
  • PTAWUG and Jawug have different ways of operation and management as well as totally different types of donation systems, rather than forcing down one system over everyone, have each network continue as they have before BUT learn from each other and adopt better systems over time. The geographic factor also plays a role - ppl from JHB dont want to come to PTA to fix a site or do tests. [ProtZkroG]
  • For example - The USA is one country, one constitution, one name, symbols, etc. But each state within the Union still has its own laws and way of operating - manages it's own affairs. [ProtZkroG]
  • I feel that JAWUG and PTAWUG should stay 2 separate entity's and continue to operate as is. It is important to learn from each other, and also work together on things for example inter-linking. However I think its great to market them under one name, although its 2 independently managed networks. Example, advertise GAUWUG, and as soon as some one goes to that website, let them choose the network in their area. See GAUWUG as the holding company of PTAWUG and JAWUG.   • I think we have two steps first vote for one name or not. If we decide on one name then we decide how to manage admin etc. [zaber]
  • One name does not mean that everything must be adminned at a central point, you cannot vote without knowing all the facts, pros and cons and other people's input. [ProtZkroG]
  • My vote is for decentralised administration (to the greater-suburb level) but all working under one umbrella name - so for example you have Lynnwood-WUG and Randburg-WUG etc (shortnames for example lynn-wug-1, randb-wug-2) but all one WUG (no more Joburg Area, PTA etc) -- gripen
  • One umbrella name means separate per-area admin but no more cliques i.e. existing PWP situation. They become an area of the global WUG, same as the JAWUG areas, same as the PTAWUG areas. One big happy family but more of a family tree under one surname not all in one house (so to speak) -- gripen

  • froztbyte: suggesting the alternative of creating a commons where we can add artwork, banners, ideas, slogans, supplier links etc, which both WUGs could use to create marketing. This, in line with making more use of this wiki (which is now in fact happening), is a very good step to organizing a single point of entry for new users, but while still keeping the entities behind it separate.

  • DenSweep: If we merge and market the WUGs as one, then we also need to be able to deliver on that premise. In other words, we proclaim 389 users, that means we need to have a reliable link between Jhb and Pta, with respectable speeds. I really feel though that we can merge the names for marketing purposes, fresh ideas etc, but each city/area still operates under its own rules/guidelines. Also like that, there is less chance of politics and bickering occuring.
  • realiser: Consider creating a SAWUG body to govern things like standards, the main website (and wiki), databases, marketing and dealing with the authorities. Each regional WUG is responsible for their own finances and network but federates with SAWUG for purposes of a single voice and inter-connect. Maybe the WUGs contribute some kind of small fee to SAWUG for those essential services nobody wants to worry about. Why limit things to PTA and JHB? I'd like to set up a WUG in George with an inter-connect to other WUGs.

  2. dankie aan al die mense wat gewerk het aan die onderskeie highsites - dit is goed as mense 'n site onder hulle vlerk neem en dit maintain en opfix soos Bloax, W0W en Jaco met Raslouw - die ouens het uit hulle eie besluit om dit te doen en dit is reg, hulle verwag nie erkenning daarvoor of so nie - jy help en jy maak reg omdat dit n Wireless USERS Group is. Jy het nie n titel of spesiale posisie nodig om iets te doen nie en jy sit nie en wag dat iemand anders dit doen nie.
  3. Op die oomblik run die wug nogal smooth, al die sites is op, daar is nie groot maintainence wat gedoen moet word of nuwe sites opgesit word nie, dit is te danke aan almal se harde werk oor die laaste 2 maande. Ons moet nou fokus om die huidge links te verbeter, soos bv EP-WG.
  4. Ons het nou n rebate dealer rekening by scoop.co.za ook - so daar is n alternatief as miro nie stock het nie. Die plan dat die admin taak van toerusting koop op die suppliers gesit word is goed - enige user kan daarna gaan en sy toerusting koop en ons kry die 10% daarop.
  5. dankie aan tanne wat vir ons die uber wug merchandise gemaak het - dit is ook n goeie voorbeeld van iemand wat nie gesit en wag het dat iemand anders iets doen nie, maar opgestaan het en inisiatief geneem het.
  6. PTA-Centurion link : die nuwe site langs die R21 (Salbu) sal dit moontlik maak om aan Pin Oak en dan ZK of LT in Centurion te link - dit behoort die spoed baie te verbeter. bashTux organise dit vir ons.
  7. nog 'n link in die moot in - DaVirus gaan direk link met grids aan RR en DW - so dan is daar nog n redundant link soontoe - sal die spoed vir daardie ouens baie verbeter. Die Moot manne moet hom net so bietjie help om aan die gang te kom :)
  8. Gaming tyd - Pings oor erg besige links is altyd hoog. Moet ons weer gaming queues terugbring? En oor watse tye?
  9. Meshing - Ons moet try om meer onder mekaar te begin mesh. Veral van Cent tot Oos. Prioritise the shortest link between users from East to Cent. Once done, spiral outwards.
  10. Event Days - Host LANS, Big Screen sport days to generate extra income for future HS's.
